Description
ZUNI TWO SIDED CORN MAIDEN FETISHHAND CARVED FAYE QUANDELACY or FAMILY
Previously owned, in very fine condition.
From my 93yo mother's collection of Zuni Pueblo fetishes, she had purchased many of these over the years. Likely purchased from 1990's to 2010's. Many different artists collected.
Check my listings, there will be more of this collection listed.
Hand carved (unknown stone) by Zuni Indian fetish carver, I believe to be from one of the Quandelacy family members. My search showed this could be by Faye Quandelacy. Many in the family have similar styles. While Sandra Quandelacy style is very unique.
I didn't see a hallmark, I enlarged the picture. (see last pic)

Information from search:
CORN MAIDEN
In the Zuni Pueblo the three stages of woman are recognized as:
Maiden, symbolizing potential
Mother, the life giver
Grandmother, the wise elder
Usually the maiden fetish will be emerging from corn (the corn maiden) or she will have whorls of hair on the side of her head, signifying that she has not had a child. The mother fetish also can be emerging from the corn (the corn mother) and she will have children with her or look pregnant. The grandmother usually has a shawl over her head and no corn represented on her body.
The Zuni's feel that it is the spirit within the fetish that is of value, not the object itself. The Zuni's regard ceremonial fetishes in carefully dictated ways, while no strict guidelines apply to non-ceremonial fetishes.
