  • Condition: This beautiful carving is in perfect conditioned. It was purchased during one of my visits to the Zuni Reservation and the many fetish artists. The maiden is shown as a corn maiden on one side and as a ceremonial dressed maiden on the other side

    fetish was carved by Native American
    KATERI SANCHEZ
    from
    CORAL
    . Kateri is the daughter of Georgia Quandelacy. She shows her maiden as both the traditional
    CORN MAIDEN
    on one side and in
    CEREMONIAL DRESS
    with her long hair and multiple cabochon made of coral, black marble and turquoise each made by Kateri herself. Note the
    crosses and dragonflies
    etched into the dress for good luck.
    Corn Maidens emerged with the Zuni from the underworld. According to Zuni Mythology the Maiden was considered important to bring plentiful harvests.
    The ZUNI tribe fetish carvers are the most collectible and world renowned among Native Americans.
    I purchased this carving during one of my many visits to the Zuni Reservation in New Mexico.
    This excellent Maiden fetish measures 5/8"along the front, 1/2"wide and 3 1/16"high.
